Consider brushing up the basics, being able to draw figures as base to build upon is good for power armors. Regardless as to joint will work and interception problems, the armor should at least envelope the volume of the figure.

"old school" could mean a lot of things, although since you mention bubblegum crisis, I am guessing you mean late 80s and early 90s ova style. Its just basic cel-shading, except they do two step more than some of the modern style. They have different emphasis on where they denote the forms. Do some study of specific screen grab of the style you like might help.
