Makes perfect sense if you consider the climate.
The modern perception of ancient greeks and romans as autistic, analytical purityfags is more of north european thing. Especially germanics.
It makes more sense for people living in warm climates with access to cool shit like pigments, spices, gems, textile, etc. to make art that is colorful and gaudy. Something that is nowadays perceived as oriental than european. Imagine pagan temples adorned with psychedelic ornaments, full of brightly painted pottery, people wearing expensive textiles with elaborate patterns, etc.
