waaa how do i draw mouths? with teeth too ?

I recently got a graphics pad to draw on, but I find that I can't just lightly drop tones down with brushes, it's either completely pitch black or nothing shows up at all. I've tried dicking around with the sensitivity on my graphics pad but nothing really helps.

Anyone else run into this? How do I resolve it? What am I doing wrong?
