Hey man couple of things.
Short gestures are designed to make you focus on the line of action, the "core" or "beef" of the action.
Keep it simple, you're not trying to represent the figure, you're trying to describe the action.

Disregard bodyparts, you want your lines to be as long and unbroken as they can be.
For example in the top right figure, I described the figures left arm through the torso towards the middle of the right leg with one line.

I'd recommend watching proko's gesture video's on youtube, since he descibes it better than i ever could.
