I'm not that great with watercolors but I'd say definitely use a normal brush if you can since it's hard to control the water and paint saturation with a water brush. Being able to dab the extra water off your brush is very useful imo. And if you want to layer colors to intensify or darken them it's difficult not to reactivate and lift off paint when your brush is constantly wet
