It's pretty bad for him considering his entire body of work, but keep in mind he made tons of paintings, some of them in less than an hour, so I'm sure (like everyone), he has some lame quickies.

his sad and interesting life story is definitely a big part of it, but even other artists at the time respected him. he had a very unique and avant garde style, and a freshness and "seen" quality to his work (meaning you could tell they were painted by looking at a real object) that still resonates with many people today. also a strong graphic style he brought into the western world from japanese printmaking (like several other artists obsessed with asian art)
