I am also a /beg/ but I'll try to give some decent feedback.

Fur is hard, I def wouldn't start there for if you're just getting back in the game. But you should first block out your subject with simple geometries. Use the geometries to decide if the plane of that geometry is facing the light and how dark or light it should be.

Right now it feels like you're on the right track but it's lacking contrast and comes off flat. Also, even the paper in your photo is really far from pure white so that isn't helping.
