Anime/manga is cartooning. You can't forget that when you're studying There will be some degree of symbols and shorthands that by themselves compose a very important aspect of what's appealing.

Understanding how to draw realistic is a really good tool and will put you miles above someone who "just draws" and learned appealing symbols like we see a lot of jap artists do... but it's not a replacement for learning the actual language of what works and doesn't in the aesthetic you're trying to emulate. You can learn to draw realistic marine animals all you want, but that doesn't make you good at drawing Spongebob characters by default, and it really feels like a lot of people reject this because with anime, we're still talking about humans.

The subs actually give a lot of insight. I'd rather not rip this at all without them.

For example, this dude worked on Eva and Code Geass and he dead ass says that proper perspective is cool and dandy but gets in the way of cuteness a lot of the times for anime characters, so he avoids it unless he's doing something realistic. It stands at odds with what a lot of people here believe, but his results speak for themselves
