Kinda hard to explain in words. I happened to have a lot of the older states saved as layers so I threw pic related together. Hopefully helps somewhat.

What I tried to do is mostly focus on establishing overall forms (neck is a bent cylinder, head has parts of cones, spheres, boxes, etc). Define a light direction, and try to model according to those base forms.

As for detail, a good amount was from the drawing in the first panel. A lot of the details come just from refining edges a bit, clarifying larger planes, etc. Most of the bits of detail come from an edge trick seen in the Arne Jansson painting down there. Min Yum does it a lot in his work too, and I've always liked it.

For the detailing, be much more subtle with your color and value transitions. You don't want to break the big light and dark shapes.

From the 100% zoom you can see that the painting is a bit sloppy, but reads better once it's downscaled for the web. I noticed that was the case with a lot of the art of the Massive Black guys back when somebody posted full res file samples of their work.

>tldr: Paint/think of simple major forms > refine to smaller and smaller forms
