I need help with the Pure Contour Drawing and Modified Contour Drawing in "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".

As regards Pure Contour Drawing, I'm not sure I understand how to perform the exercise right. The author says to draw for 30min but then he says to set a timer for 5min. Is this a typo? Am I supposed to do multiple session of 5min for a total of thirty?
Also am I supposed to do this exercise with continuous line or can I take the pencil off the paper? Does it even matter how I choose to do it? The thing is I'm not supposed to look at the drawing until the end of the session.

As regards Modified Contour Drawing, I'm using a tablet and drawing digitally. I'm not sure I could perform the first part of the exercise, which is drawing the contour of your hand as seen through a transparent sheet of plastic, but I could simulate the second part by taking pics of my hand and using them as reference. Any advice on how to procede for this part while using digital drawing media?
