Hey Anon, the way I approach strands of hair is a derivative from my skill set I use for drapery. In order to do drapery without getting frustrated you really need to have a good grasp on your forms; A good way to practice that is do make some cross contours on some objects, both primitives and of your own design.

I put together some visuals for how I currently think and what I use when I put the stands in. It largely boils down to plotting and twisting a plane. Let me know if you could use any more clarification on anything and I'll do my best to help.
