You have to be very meticulous with it. Hatching isn't something you can just throw down and have it look good right away.

For curved objects, don't be afraid to angle your lines to "match" the direction of the surface you're adding value to. For flat objects with even lighting, make sure all of your hatches are exactly evenly spaced.

A good place to start practicing hatching is to draw a box with at least 6 segments, and then use hatching to fill each sub-box in a scale going from dark to light.
