Practice makes better practice.

This might be a bit out of your league or it could be just what you need if you're thinking in 3D, but consider a block out like the one on the left.

Having clearly defined front planes, side planes and bottom planes is also beneficial both with alignment of things, and later when rendering.

It's the same process, construct the base, make planes, except you lay down value to make the plane. It's basically what you do with hatching in academic drawing, only you're really drunk and mistakes are easy to fix. Just construct first, make them planes flat and them noses mostly perpendicular.
