I would recommend getting comfortable with the fundamentals - the more used you are to basic things like making lines, observational drawing and perspective, the easier it will be to focus on more advanced things (like portraying an idea in your mind).

For starters I suggest the Drawabox ghosted lines/planes exercise (don't worry too much about the ghosting itself, it's useful but not always mandatory like he says), and when you get bored of that, you can move on to just doing pages of parallel/overlapping lines and curves as a drawing warm-up.
