>christ, how am i supposed to go from shitty anime sketches to something of this caliber in my lifetime
Dedicate your entire life to the craft, and study under similar masters who will push you to the breaking point to improve.

Finding such a teacher is nearly impossible these days. Your best alternative, unironically, is to study art history closely. Find pieces that blow you away and truly, really, seriously try to emulate them. Not copy them, but push yourself to create similar levels of fidelity. You'll fail over and over, but with each failure, go back to your piece and close analyse the techniques you used to assemble it, and ask yourself "What new techniques might I need to develop to get that one next step closer to my goals?" Imagine those techniques, practice them til they are mastered.

Without studying art history, and I mean very closely studying the color, composition and aesthetics of great paintings you end up falling in love with, you will miss out on so much of your potential. Your personal sense for aesthetics will develop more slowly. Falling in love with beautiful art is like a yoke that pulls your skills forward.
