Left is using Vilppu's "modelling tone". Middle is painting the light as I saw it in the reference. Right is from memory.

I can't make the modelling tone look good. It's impossible. Vilppu tells you to ignore the lighting in the photo and to just "push the sides back", but I think this is the wrong way to learn. If you want to learn lighting, you have to observe it. The more I draw, the more I like Loomis and Steve Huston and David Finch, rather than Vilppu. Maybe recommending Vilppu to everyone is a big mistake. Maybe I'm just fundamentally misunderstanding what the modelling tone is.

glad to see you back. How much are you doing from memory and imagination? Have you started copying other artists yet? I think you're ready to do mostly master copies. You will continue to improve your head drawing if you copy them from artists, I think.
