Find some pics of a asaro head (pic related), sketch out the shapes that comprise it, and then try painting it. Do this exercise enough times, you can then try taking a picture of a real person, breaking them down into the fundamentally shapes as illustrated by the asaro head, and then try painting them.

Additionally look to and study from existing artists for reference and painting techniques. Based on what you've posted I think you'll like Ayran Oberto and Anthony Jones.
