Something to do with vocal chord damage from smoke, where she worked burned down or something and it damages the whole speech parts if you breathe in too much. Doc told her not to speak for couple of weeks, and then when she did after that time they still too weak and they broke or something. I didn't even know they could do that.

Same thing happened to Bonnie Tyler once I think except hers didn't break totally, just tore or something after surgery. It's what gave her the distinctive throaty/smoky voice though and that made her career, before that she was going nowhere.

It's fixable but health insurance and all that and she lives abroad now so things are all complicated, plus for what she does and how she is, she doesn't really mind being mute. I taught her to whistle like R2D2 though, so can tell basic things through sound still.
