It's more for trying to get a feel for values and composition, I find it interesting to look at works done by competent artists and see the value structure, and how much you can break it down and still have it be recognizable. I'm also reading Framed Ink to try and learn composition right now, and a lot of his work is very graphic in a sort of 3 or 4 value style, so I'm trying to learn to get a similar effect.

It's a shame that lots of pictures of works by masters online have the contrast blown out, which sort of makes it less effective.

That said, your advice is useful in a different but equally helpful way, so thank you for that as well!
