Not saying it's a japanese thing, but now that you mention it, anon said "every few pages", which is more in the vein of Illustrated books, I guess I didnt read that part.

Also, now that you mention Wonderland, you're not entirely correct here. Light Novel as a format seems to be a japanese thing, while books like Alice in Wonderland works on a different illustrated book format.
I read Wonderland (first two chapters at least) and illustrations werent an active part of the format, you'd only see them at the introduction of a chapter, halfway through or at the end, you still had a few pages of text and pieces of narrative that went without illustrations.
Meanwhile, in light novels, you have illustrations always on the opposite side of the writing, visually representing the writing at the other side, effectively covering both textually and visually the whole narrative.
