If you want to definitively know if you've improved or not, I'd recommend drawing from life/realism as a measure of your ability to draw what you see (and not from symbols). If you can execute these exercises well, you can look back at your original, stylized work and see what you should pour your time into (ex- the faces are bland, the poses aren't dynamic, my compositions could use work, etc etc). Keep checking things off that list until you're happy.

Also, draw things outside your comfort zone, and preference, if you get the chance. You'll broaden your horizons and be able to implement techniques you wouldn't have thought to use before.

Early on, you can strive to make your art look similar to the artists you admire, but you should always be striving for your own individual "look"- It can be similar, sure, but don't try to replicate 100% of what you see from them.
