I don't have the link saved, but you can go to his twitter and find it where he admits that 95% of the work he was doing at the time was tracing design doll.

I didn't use it as an excuse to undermine his skill. I was just saying he traces design doll. Plenty of artists do it, like the Prison School guy although he uses a completely different program.

I had a picture of his method but lost it. It's probably somewhere on his twitter.
He does the same thing the guy who does prison school does, he sets up scenes in a model poser, traces the grid and the figures as a base then adds in the details over it.
I'm pretty sure he used Design Doll.

Plenty of artists use refs, it's doesn't really matter.
Yusuke Murata and Inio Asano use 3d software to help draw bgs while some artists like Akira Hiramoto just straight up draw over 3d models for their figures.
