You're doing it right, I think. Everything can be break down into simpler forms (cube, cylinder, etc.) so the idea is, if you're able to draw those basic forms into perspective, you just have to refine them to draw the more complicated stuff. I drew this to explain the idea behind that: my man is crude and basically a wodden mannequin. Loomis, Reilly, etc. have more complicated and accurate models to follow, but the idea is exactly the same. You don't know what the arm should look like, so you draw a correct cylinder, now you know what the arm should look like.
