I've been blending. Pic is basically seven solid color pens. As I've mentioned earlier, I did this shit at work and hurried it. There's minimal layers on the horse girl because I'm impatient and wanted to get parts done rather than stop in the middle of a layer.

This is another lesson. If I hurry, be prepared to get called out on the low quality.

Thing is, I like getting shit done. I left so much shit unfinished in my life that is rather do a compete job badly than a good one partially.

Acrylic paint dries faster. You have a time limit. Oil you got literally days under some conditions. Gouache you have theoretically forever because you can reactivate it with water or cover it.

That's ballpoint pen. The two hardest colors to find are yellow and brown.
That pen in the picture is a bic sun. Office max has it in a three pack.

Brown is harder to come by. I had to use a fisher space pen brown refill in a zebra f-701.

The reasons to use ballpoint:
Cheap (except some colors)
Waterproof
Varying line darkness
Works on any paper
Doesn't require sharpening
Can blend with alcohol (I haven't tried this)
The downside is that it takes forever.
Here is a video of the technique that took me ages to find:

Blending skin tone is challenging with paint, but super hard with pen or pencil.

I'm hoping to save you the time and money I spent figuring this shit out. I do art during downtime at work, so for my specific needs ballpoint is best. Sharpening in a work truck is annoying.
If I was in a studio I'd use colored pencil with spirits, but I said use watercolor pencil because you can refill your brush pen anywhere.
Also gel pen isn't great for blending because there's no variation.
I haven't tried markers. I had them as a kid so I'm not really into them. Ask someone else about those.
