Not that it's any less messy but if you have the staedtler one the metal cap part comes off and the hole on top is an on-the-go sharpener. Just give it a quick blow to keep it clean.

Otherwise my sharpener is the same as pictured and I've noticed that it does occasionally spew graphite out if I drop it. Shoving a small wad something like tissue or toilet paper solves that problem as long as I'm not shaking it like a maraca. You can also put it in a zip lock baggy and simply hold the sharpener while it's still in the bag and just shove your pencil in through the opening.
