You need to start working on a more advanced form of gestures like Vilppu/Hampton. That's what's really gonna help you draw more fleshed out characters from the start. The more fluid your gestures are the more life they'll have from the start. Pic related are 5 minute sketches where you can clearly see very advanced levels of gesture at work under the hood.

As someone obsessed with gesture images of this level are like porn for me.
