Decided to stop putting head/face studies aside. Not as crushing as I thought it'd be at least.

It looks like you're on the right track even though you're frustrated now. Improvement will come with practice. Just be more mindful of foreshortening and perspective to sell the direction the head is facing, and don't be afraid to redline your own work by overlaying your references to figure out where things went wrong.
