I'm trying to learn human drawing, but really struggling with gesture drawing. I understand why gesture is important, but making a "gesture drawing" is really difficult and frustrating. As a beginner, it feels overwhelming having to think about proportions, movement, perspective, angles, boney landmarks and keeping everything on the page all at the same time.

Every single "figure drawing course" insists gesture is the "most important part" about learning to draw the figure, and that you must always practice "gesture drawings". Is this really the most practical approach?

I hear a lot of instructors insisting that "gesture is more important than structure", and that beginners learning to draw should always focus on gesture and expression more than drawing a subject accurately.

Is this really good advice though? I feel like a lot of the time when beginners attempt to draw expressively, the subject's proportions get blown out of whack, often exceeding the boundaries of the canvas. I feel like this philosophy has actually lead a lot of experienced artists to develop bad habits which are very noticeable.

Why do you guys talk so much about video courses, books, instructors and more?

This short video is literally all you will ever need:

Anything more is snake oil and a waste of time.

You people keep saying to "practice fundamentals" and then never explain what those are. I'm a little tired of it tbqh.

Does display vs non-display matter for sculpting software like zbrush? I would think this is one instance where screen less could work nicely, but I heard zbrush's UI is optimized for display tablets.

Is it possible to improve your art by reading heaps of books and watching video tutorials, but not drawing as much? Sometimes I just can't find the motivation to draw, but surely watching tutorial videos constantly helps to some degree?

How do you sketch on screenless tablets? It seems so difficult compared to paper; the mark you make on the tablet comes out so much bigger on the screen, and it just feels weird making your marks at a right angle to the actual drawing.

>"I drewed already, I made a drewing of sanic"
>"but you traced that from a book, that's not how you should draw"
>"no I just put the sheet next to the book, like this"
>"you know that when you lie your nose grows like pinocchio? how about you draw minecarf! who's your favorite character?"
>"steve"
>"see he's really simple, all the characters in minecraft are simple, they're made of bo-"
>he's protesting but I now realize I have a duty
>"listen son, you must draw Steve 250 times, this is really important. you'll thank me later"
>"is 250 more than 10"
>"yes"
>by the end of the day he hates drawing, swears to never draw anything again, especially boxes
It was already too late... I couldn't save this poor soul
