Dude, you need to go back and learn how to draw properly before you go into painting.
You need to revise anatomy, you need to study again shapes and values.
Go paint some solid shapes with a hard brush, your stuff is blurry and dirty as fuck. You need to learn to be economic with you brushstrokes instead of smearing paint everywhere.
Also try not using black when you use colors.

Pic kinda related, it's your christmas present: a random tutorial

starting to get somewhere! I'm not usually big on tutorial or step by step images but I think this may help you

And this

The general idea for 99% of painting is that you work from simple -> complex. "Block in" big shapes with a hard brush and then go and refine them, you always want the relationships between the initial "big shapes" to be apparent and carried through all the way to the final piece.

As for your sketch. The linework is unconfident and having wrapping lines around the figure would benefit it in terms of showing volume.

Hm, not sure why it would be too much to handle. It's actually easier to keep all your values and such in check when you work the whole canvas at once since everything is relative.

Here's a demo I did for an anon like a year ago. It's a bit more structured an approach than I actually use (I tend to do several steps at once) but maybe it will help a bit?

I think the problem will be helped a lot if there were some stricter rules on /ic/. Like you should only

1. Post your own shit for critique
2. Post references
3. Post works by other artists only as educational examples or to explain a point. Something like this.

That would help cut down on the feels/hate/witch-hunt threads and encourage cool shit like references, examples of good composition or color usage, etc etc.

There's one approach here:
http://www.erikgist.com/ErikGist_WattsAtelierFigureTutorial.pdf

You'll also find a few examples in charcoal scattered throughout Nathan Fowkes's blog. You'll have to dig around though.

There's also pic related done by anon a while back.

This should come in handy.
Work from simple -> complicated when it comes to rendering. Check ctrlpaint.com for some neat tutorials and remember to practice from life as well as photos.

Also here is a simple step by step I did for /ic/ a llittle while back, maybe it helps. I was trying to simplify the process for someone here. The problem with it though is that to make it clear and straightforward the approach is actually a bit different from how I actually paint, but it probably isn't a bad way of thinking of things.
