Wasn't entirely sure what you had in mind for the pants nor what their shape was, your highlights are all over the place. In general, keep it simple and be mindful of the form. Don't go from black to white, reserve those for the most occluded or specular areas. That said im a fucking shit teacher, so the image attached has basically everything you need to know, spend ~5-10hours on a study of that with the intent of understanding why areas are the value they are and where the light is coming from. Also notice the range the values are contained in for the most part.
