Steven Universe drags into that zone of animation where story is the supporting pillar of the structure.
When it comes to the art departments, it looks not over simplified, and kiddy for the most part. I am moreover interested in the backgrounds and the surrounding areas of the series rather than pandering to the animations.
I did a test on trying to recreate the backdrop during sundown, worked out really well, but I doubt I'd nail the figures and building structures on the first tries.
Back to the argument of having a standard and your friend is mentioning anime as a right measurement stick, is absurdly bullshit.
Yes. Animes with a good budget keeps the astetics afloat, but fails gradually in example story or animations (re-cuts, loops, still poses and camera shifting straight outta the book f.ex).
In short, Western cannot be judged out of anime. It's rather question of how well the expirience the journey throughout gave to one personally. I hate the endless references, but Gumball and Gravity Falls fault at that problem aswell.
