>way more beg-tier than expected
Please stop using this retarded /ic/ terminology. The work looks wonky and inconsistent but it utilizes many techniques a beginner would not be familiar with and the line control is far, far beyond that of a beginner. I'm not defending it, this manga looks like ass (I don't even really like the later art, far too tone-heavy), just arguing against the usage of nonsensical terminology.

Even that's not "beg-tier". If that person was a beginner then they were a fucking savant. An obvious sign that an artist isn't a beginner is that you can tell what they're trying to fucking convey. Kind of important in comics, no?

Conflating beginner work with shoddy/inconsistent/wonky/weird looking work is completely wrong and gives actual beginners an inflated idea of what a "beginner"'s work should look like.

Anyway to answer the question, probably quite a few of "alternative" mangaka whose drawings don't really need to look super pretty or refined. This doesn't mean it's impossible, but the mindset of editors is that they assume everybody who wants to become a mangaka does so because they love manga and could see themselves doing nothing else (because who would willingly become a professional mangaka with all that entails without truly loving it?). Therefore, if it is assumed that you either don't have it in you to make something interesting/good enough, or you're just lazy and in either case you're not up to snuff. There are cases where people have pivoted into manga from other fields such as the Usogui guy, the Ranking of Kings guy, the Maid In Abyss guy and so on, but it's generally quite rare and exceptional. This may be because it's really, really difficult on its own, and it may be because of the editor's mindset regarding old farts in or past their 30s.
