I started digital painting a few months ago after getting bored of pencil drawings and the main concept that helped me wrap my head around it was to block in the large masses of the subject/reference with a couple colors to get a general sense of the layout and then chisel away at it to get more and more detail with more colors and refined shapes
It would be helpful to know what art medium you enjoy though because drawing and painting have different learning pathways.
Also use a reference no matter what, creating from imagination is for people that have a decade of good experience burned into their muscle memory not us /beg/lets, my theory is that whenever you see someone that has made no progress over several years its because they created from imagination too often
