I have some other thoughts about it, if anyone cares.

All I've said above is easier said than done; you can simplify forms either by laboring over your sketch for a long time before doing the final layer of ink or whatever, or by having drawn the forms so much that you know some things automatically. Or maybe both. In any case, it's not something that comes easily and without putting in the hours.

If you are a western artist that has been raised on comics and post-enlightenment paintings as standards of quality like most of us are, it's really difficult to ignore our instinct and refrain from adding more and more detail. The thing with manga and the Japanese in general is about precision, so every line has to convey as much as possible. Look at some sumi-e and you'll see that they're trying to convey as much form as possible with the least amount of strokes as possible. Funnily enough, it's something I notice in Sargent. He's amazing at conveying a lot of form with a single brush stroke.
