He didn't say that, he's saying comic book readers need stylized characters so they can self insert, he literally says a set of lines to BE. He confusingly calls this masking for some reason, even though masking already has a meaning in visual art. The implication is that realistically drawn characters are too much for the audience, revealing how little he thinks of you.
Saying stylized faces and figures are drawn that way because
