Drawing from life as a beginner is the stupidest thing you could do.
>Look at pic related
That's how most begs would draw a portrait. Why?

Because they dont know how to STYLIZE.
You HAVE to know how to stylize something before you can draw it. Otherwise, if you try to draw something without stylizing, you get results like in pic related.

So here's the progress of learning how to draw something:
>What does it look like in real life?
>How do other artists draw it?
>Copy other artist while looking at life to see WHAT they stylized
>Study anatomy to learn WHY they used specific marks

I'm open to suggestions.
No one else have given practical advice on how to draw something as far as I've seen on this board.
This thread seems the most sane of the other threads, ironically.

I'm open to any suggestions.
Do you have a better way to learn to draw something?

Might as well post this here too
>Look at pic related
It proves that you CANNOT draw from life without first being able to stylized something first!

People are seething over at my thread because no matter how many times I ask them to prove me wrong, they cannot because i am right about this.

You cannot make a face look good WITHOUT stylizing it (unless you paint it or give it realistic shading that takes hours).

This is why beginners draw like pic related. It's because they dont know that they HAVE to stylized. You have to.
You can't just jump into drawing from life. It's a waste of time.

You have to first learn how to stylize what you want to draw before you can actually draw that thing from life.

Feel free to provide any counter examples. I'm willing to debate but I won't take seriously any gaslighting comments.

For Absolute Beginners:

tldr;
- Stop trying to copy from life.
- You have to stylize in order to make something look good (with simple line).
- Copy from other artists instead.

There's this meme that keeps going around that you have to draw from life which is absolutely terrible advice for absolute beginners.
When an absolute beginner goes to copy something from life, they will inevitably attempt to copy the resulting image in pic related.
Then they wonder why their drawings always look like shit.
It's because you are not stylizing!
You MUST stylize in order to make a drawing look good!
(The only exception is in realism and painting but I'm talking specifically to most beginners who start off with a simple pencil/pen and paper.)

You MUST copy other artist's styles and see how THEY stylize certain features of the face.
It would actually be a good idea to trace that specific drawing of a face or anything else you want to draw because your trace will determine what you are paying attention to when you try to copy that drawing.

If your tracing looks like shit, do not expect your copy to look any better.

This also made me realize that you don't study Anatomy to know how to draw something.
You study Anatomy to learn how to stylize something.

I'm sure experienced artists will try to debate this because they haven't analyzed this concept before (because they never needed to) but copy pic related. Do a copy of it without rendering or painting and using simple line.
It's inevitable that you end up stylizing.
You will always add or remove information that is or isn't there.
It's inevitable.
You HAVE to.

So expecting absolute beginners to draw from life and then wondering why their drawings always looks like shit is complete ignorance and is exactly why we have things like /ASG/.

It's because most of those people were tricked into "drawing from life" without any context whatsoever.
