Get as many references as you can, including a written description of how you want your character to be clothed/posed/etc. The folder of references and the text document should be more than enough. Have him send you a sketch to see if it suits your taste and adjust if needed. If he's a seasoned artist, he should understand the motions of getting commissions through.
