>I know nothing about this
i'm far from being an expert, but i've always been interested in art and art history, and i think art history is fundamental and crucial to understand and appreciate all forms of art.
you can find (or get close to) the real motivations that lay under every work of art, from religious medieval manuscripts to conceptual video installations, from impressionism to petrogliphs in caverns. and in that way you can reaaly see what the artist was doing, the motivations, what the painting mean in that special place and time context.

take for example this work of mondrian. if you don't know nothing of it you can consider it just a bunch of lines, boring and with no skills showing..
but for it's time was a revolution, and it was talking about a revolutionary kind of music. both the visuals and the music were at that time as revolting as punk or industrial rock were later.
