People make a point that manga tends to show more rather than tell; I've always found this to be interesting because when you look at the general accepted formats for comics and manga, it reflects some neat history. Your average comic page is 7x10"; artists working in comics tend to fill each page with as much information (both visual and dialog) as they can. Now compare that to the manga tankōbon format, where each page must be 5x7"; that's essentially digest-sized. Some western comics used to be distributed in similar formats for a while but was quickly phased out in favor of the aforementioned 7x10" (European comics are even bigger iirc). Manga chapters often get serialized in magazines before eventually getting collected into individual tankōbon, so there's never really been a reason to adopt a larger format. At 5x7", artists obviously have very little space to work with, and they sure as hell don't want readers needing a magnifying glass just to consume their work. This incentivizes looser-feeling panel structure, resulting in more casual or expressive (?) illustrations. So I think things like bleeds, splash pages, and two-page spreads are much more common in manga than comics; that is at least, they tend to be more tastefully done. You don't really see that in comics unless the illustrator just so happens to also be a painter, which there's a whole history of painted comics one could dive into so it's not that like those are necessarily "defining" features of manga, but w/e.
