I thought that, somehow, OP had misplaced his shadows but noo, It all comes down to stylistic choices and preferences. There are pictures that benefits from being desaturated, not everything has to pop pop pop.
This would be like, all proportions kept, saying that old anime BGs are desaturated and that we should had more layers
