mostly just looks flat, but do it anyway, the patterning is good practice for getting a handle on shapes. You really gotta work on form though, it looks like you're resting on stylish ideas which will only get you so far.

They look adequately black, the real problem is sameface. You gotta capture what really makes the individual. Read what kenyon cox says about realism from the paragraph on page 108 that begins with "One set of artists, in representing..."
