value study. how do you guys approach simplifying values for areas that are not the focus of the piece? how do you make something look simple without it also looking like crap?

push your values. your value range is really small. dont paint against a white background -- it makes it hard to judge your values. try scrubbing the canvas with some desaturated midtones at the start of the pic, or right after you've done your initial sketchy lineart. if i were you id hold off on colors altogether for now and just focus on drawing skills and values.
