This right here, this assumption and mindset is why Westerns all suck at drawing anime. Because this mindset is ingrained in western art culture. Every 14 that walks into their first day of highscool art class is told to immediately stop drawing that damn anime. They are told exactly what you are regration now.
>You have to study real life before you can warp it, no exceptions.
And sure this is 100% true if you want to develop your own unique style and way of warping reality, but anime isn't unique now is it? If this was how anime arts got good, their would be tons of unique animations and styles, every cartoon would look different Like it is in the west, because the west follows your mindset.
But that's not the way anime is, it's highly derivative. Every decade has it's own clearly defined highly mimicked style. It's clear they learn this style by copying it. That's how you get good at anime. You draw anime.
Now DON"T get me wrong, FUNDEMTALS are vital to all drawing, including anime. You still have to have a solid understanding of things like construction, anatomy , and perspective to draw good anime. But these things all apply to drawing anime, so if you learn how to apply them, which is where you should start when learning to draw, you apply them to your anime drawings and practice both at the same time. Just because it's not real doesn't mean the fundamentals of drawing don't apply to it.
