Depends on how you treat it. If you plan to hit it big with creative art, you're right. You're very unlikely to.

That being said, there are tons of art related jobs that are attainable if you work towards them. Concept art, linework assistants, calligraphy, tattoo work, etc.

I've worked as an assistant comicker, more recently a tattoo artist, commission work (inconsistent though) and logo designer. Decided art would be my job when I was 13 or so, and so far it has been.

Can't say i make good money but at least I get by doing what I enjoy. I work a part time job as well to stay afloat though.
