If you mean the resizing, they didn't get cucked out of space that severely back in the day. And in a way, the resizing pushed them in a good direction, since they needed to have very strong composition and readability. Even cartoony gag strips have very clever use of value.
If it's colouring, back then it wasn't nearly as bad as the photoshop monkeys today. Not as good as the B&W, but most newspaper strips were left intact.
