Use plumb lines and copy bargue plates. Though here's a disclaimer, it will only help you at getting better a copying and not drawing from imagination, that's an entirely separate skill. Your observational skills will improve, which will give you a better jumping off point for learning how to draw from imagination

As an addendum:
Definitely go to the beginner thread.
You will get more relevant excercises, critique, and probably less flak.

You should also learn some proper sighting techniques,
which would make the accuracy of your using reference a lot better.

face's are a lot about placement and volume. Learning facial planes and basic placement will help you. Also, you're not using reference correctly if it comes out worse. As a beginner, reference is best used by trying to copy it exactly. Try to match the shadow shapes, the placement, and the values. You can get these things right and check your own drawing using plumb lines (pic related). Also what I do a lot when using reference is look back and forth between ref and drawing quickly and a lot and you start seeing the differences in angles and things easier.
