Burne Hogarth started with the torso and drew the head last. I've found his method the best, personally. Every other body part sits in relation to the torso. The head gives little information.

It's probably too advanced for me- but I'm finding Hogarth's method of explaining how to draw the figure refreshing. Despite all the scientifix terms he throws around- I'm learning a heck of a lot more when I'm breaking down his dense prose than when I'm listening to artsy-fartsy bullshit about "rthymn", "flow" and "feeling the form". Hogarth explains precisely what that's all supposed to actually mean.
