How do you people develop visual libraries such that you can just recall how an antelope naturally looks and even put it in motion/gesture (looking at you, Soroneir)?

Jesus fuck.

That picture makes me significantly sad.
Because that's the sort of subject matter and baseline competency I wanted to reach as a stepping stone goal.

Two quick questions.

1) I understand that life drawing and building an intuitive grasp of the elements of art and the nature of reality through observation and re-creation is key to transitioning successfully to drawing from imagination / abstraction / cartooning / developing a style. But how is this transition made, exactly? How do I go from strong knowledge and intuition, to developing expressive characters (for instance, in animation)?

2) What is a good place to compile my work and get tough-love feedback without any hugboxiness or unnecessary drama? I am not at the stage where critique would be helpful, but at some point it would be nice to have a place to compile my work, observe my progress, and continue improving based on harsh, constructive feedback.

Let's say I'm working to break out of the "beginner" stage described in the sticky, I've read and absorbed the concepts outlined Right Side of the Brain and am currently starting on Fun with a Pencil, and want to achieve a sufficiently strong understanding of life drawing before moving on to creating from imagination (ideally, my dream is to be able to animate to some rudimentary extent).

I understand that steady practice will always aid in my improvement, but at what point does my work become "good enough" that I can benefit from artistic criticism and not waste both my time and /ic/'s (with regard to both life drawing and drawing from imagination)?
