>I own a couple of these and have them in storage.
>Which ones are missing?
I too, have a few of the missing ones, but have not myself scanned them. One anon tallied up the missing books from my image, and requested:

How to Draw Anime and Game Characters, Vol. 2 and 3
How to Draw Manga Special: Colored Original Drawing
How to Draw Manga Ultimate Manga Lessons, Vol. 2 and 5

Some runs of the books have alternate covers, and the numbering wasn't always consistent, but I think we're missing

9 - Special: Colored Original Drawing (Spanish only)
15 - Girls' Life Illustration File
16 - Guns & Military, Vol 1
17 - Guns & Military, Vol 2
27 - Male Characters (Spanish or Chinese only)
31 - More About Pretty Gals (Koran or Japanese only)
37 - Macromedia FLASH Techniques: Illustrating Bishoujo Characters
39 - Creating Stories
40 - Suits & Sailor Suits (Chinese only)
41 - Drawing Yaoi

Also, there's a totally separate series with a similar title ... Antarctic Press's "How to Draw Manga" series by Ben Dunn and his cohorts are available at their website now free of charge:

>do you guys collect books that you already have digitally?
It's the other way around; if I find digital copies of books, I generally don't get rid of the physical copy if I already have it. The exception was Soejima's first book. I bought it on a whim based on some online reviews, but after going through it, I decided he really wasn't my style. I later sold the book after picking up a digital copy.

Good work, anon. As >>4980396 pointed out, there's an artbook thread (>>4955985) here on /ic/ (for all I know, it's you, and you're one of us!), so we're undoubtedly going to cross-post some things. You've filled in a couple of gaps in my collection. Let's see if I can help the OP out.

>How many people come to /ic to learn to draw or get better at drawing?
To get better, sure.

>Why do you come in general?
To maintain the artbook thread, see what's shakin' in LAS/DAD, and maybe visit towergirls or ASG.

>Why do you stay?
Can you imagine /ic/ without an artbook thread?

>They just like the feeling of downloading and having a shit ton of material, but dont actually bother reading or studying them.
I own way more books than I've ever sat down with, but it feels good to have "that book" for when you want to draw something specific.

>Kinokuniya, I take it?
There's one of those in Manhattan. Ironically, it's across the street from the New York Library, where you can get (borrow) books for free - in theory, at least.

>To answer your question, buy whatever inspires you to draw. Artists who have techniques you want to incorporate into your art.
Here's da fing, boss:

If having a paper copy makes you more comfortable - and it might - buy as >>4337468 suggested. Otherwise, you can get as many books and inspiring images off The Internet for free as you can imagine. Between 4chan (c.f. >>4299501) and e-hentai, I've picked up electronic copies of almost every paper artbook I own, and countless hundreds more that I don't and never will.

>"But anon, why buy any books at all?"
Because I *am* more comfortable with a paper copy and in many cases, I get get them for a steep discount. I'm partial to Masamune Shirow, and I like to look through the old How to Draw Manga series, but the rest of the stuff I can pass on if I have to pay upwards of $40-50 for a book I *might* use as a reference some day. I've kept several Intron Depot books, but I ended up selling my hardcopy of Shigenori Soejima's Art Works on eBay after acquiring a digital copy for precisely this reason.

It happens to be one of the ones I have a physical copy of. Some versions of the books inexplicably have a monotone colour scheme, but not this one.

>anyone got the full collection to these how to draw manga books? I want them for nostalgias sake
I don't think so. Every collection I've found is missing some of the same books, and I've had a devil of a time tracking them down IRL - although having Half Price Books here in Texas certainly has helped. What doesn't help is the series' inconsistent numbering. At some point, the publishers renumbered them, so in one collection you could find a book that is different from the book with the same number in another collection.

>Are they viable is this day and age?
Many are, some are not. For example, I have the special edition that goes over colouring your own artwork with Copics, and talks about using the Copic airbrush system. That book is useful to me. Old volumes about using screentones - and no, not digital screentones, actual screentone sheets - are less useful.

Most of the techniques are sound and would be applicable to understanding how to draw digitally, but the little "tips and tricks" are by and large aimed at traditional drawing with pencils, ink, and markers.

>Shouldn't super basics have been volume 1.
It would make sense, wouldn't it? >>4023473 is right, though. The series jumps around quite a bit, and a lot of it is dedicated to tips and tricks from before the Dark Age of Technology that aren't very applicable if you work digitally - but I don't, which probably explains my predilection for having paper books on a shelf here instead of relying solely on digital copies.

How to Draw Manga Vol. 1 Compiling Characters
How to Draw Manga Vol. 2 Compiling Techniques
How to Draw Manga Vol. 3 Compiling Application and Practice
How to Draw Manga Vol. 4 Dressing Your Characters in Casual Wear
How to Draw Manga Vol. 5 Developing Shoujo Manga Techniques
How to Draw Manga Vol. 6 Martial Arts & Combat Sports
How to Draw Manga Vol. 7 Amazing Effects
How to Draw Manga Vol. 8 Super Basics

... and so on. To further what >>4023473 said, volume 10 is called "Getting Started". That to me sounds like it should be the first book.

Huh. I have that exact book - 11th from the left starting at the calendar.

If you like having physical copies of these books, I've found all these for cheap at Half Price Books; next week they're doing their "Spring Break" coupons, too, so if there are any left by Sunday the 17th, you could get one for 50% off!
