Basically this.
Have a goal, and make it specific. The more specific, the better.

If your shit looks bad, that means you've seen other artwork that looks "better". Figure out why that better artwork looks the way he does. Copy it, break it down, study it, then apply their methods onto yours.
Getting gud is easy, family.

Skill. Gerome was in my opinion in the top 5 of oil painters, for sheer technique alone. You have to see his paintings in person to appreciate them fully. His brushstrokes are almost microscopic, when you can see them - he built up layer after layer after layer of transparent washes. His color is perfect, and his draftsmanship is impeccable.

If there are any of his paintings displayed near you, go see them!

The Bath, my favorite, is in the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, for example.
